Outline planning consent has been granted for a community sports hall to be developed on land at the Mooragh Estate in Ramsey. The community hall will be named in memory of Ramsey legend, Jan McElroy.
Jan was a hugely popular local figure in Ramsey, he was a big supporter of Ramsey Football Club and a gifted footballer in his youth. His playing style could be likened to his namesake Jan Molby, a former star of his other love, Liverpool FC. He lead the legendary 5 a-side team the “Gems” to back to back Northern Youth League titles before injury forced him into early retirement.
He was a constant on a night out in Ramsey; always there to lend an ear, genuinely interested in what people had to say, and happy to give his opinion or advice if you needed it.
It is fair to say his passing has left a gaping hole in Ramsey particularly amongst the many friends he left behind.
Jan’s family and friends are big supporters of the community hall project, they told us;
“It’s really exciting for us to see that the hall has been granted approval in principle. We’ve been involved for some time with trying to help generate awareness of the project and have held a few fund raising events, which we will look to resume very soon. We’ve also attended different events hosted by other sporting clubs who are also eager for this project to come into fruition. As his family and friends, we’re really proud that Jan is being given such an amazing honour and wish Richard and the other members of the trust the best of luck with their application!”
