Last week, The Secret Pizza Co. celebrated the Grand Opening of their Festive Party Tent in Barracks Square, Castletown. Amidst the last minute decorations and finishing touches, Kylie and Tom kindly managed to find a tiny window of time to chat with Gef…
It has been quite the journey for The Secret Pizza Co. From van to restaurant and now to Island conquering outdoor live music venue in just over 6 months. When they started up proper on 4 May 2018 (Kylie stresses with great conviction and delight that this was on Star Wars Day), such aspirations would have seemed distant pipe dreams?
“Absolutely. We haven’t thought too far ahead at any time and our inspiration has always been just making the best of what we’ve got and seeing what happens”, says Kylie. This is an unassuming answer but one that, after speaking with them for even a short time, you truly believe. Kylie and Tom are grafters and put everything they have into SPC. They don’t oversweat the small stuff and it’s paying dividends.
For anyone that has sampled their gastronomic magnificence – the Nutty Professor is Honours List worthy – the quality of their product is of no surprise. What may surprise is their quiet but focused ambition.
The scale of the custom-made stretch tent is colossal and should triple their usual customer base in one fell swoop. There, in addition to the usual wondrous pizzas will be mulled wine, spiced ciders, blankets, and patio heaters; all keeping you cosy and festive as live music from The Tides greets your ear sockets. So what is the end goal for these two hard-working dreamers who don’t over-analyse or look too far ahead?
“We want to be the best and only year-round outdoor music venue on the Island”.
Even in the face of great stress, they have remained resolute and positive. In the run-up to the launch of tomorrow’s grand opening, they have been faced with delay after delay from planning and suppliers, not to mention their understandable concerns over the unpredictable elements. On Friday, flying by the seat of their pants, they ignored such concerns and made it in the nick of time. The gargantuan tent was erected (snigger), and as you can see from the pics, they’ve done a hell of a job.
So do the SPC have any advice for budding entrepreneurs or just those of us who are unsure if we have the confidence to pursue a career out of something they love?
“Don’t overthink it. I think our naivety when we started worked in our favour. If we had known how difficult it was going to be in advance, it would have been terrifying!”, says Kylie, with typically refreshing honesty.
“I still have no idea what I’m doing!”, chirps Tom.
They might be winging it but they’re smashing it too. Get yourself to Barracks Square in C-Town tonight for festive fun and frolics or book yourself over the Christmas period.
