Our famously changeable Isle of Man skies have been known to catch out the occasional unprepared “come over” but as the nights close in and the days grow moist its time to roll down the sleeves and prepare yourself for dodging droplets down Strand Street.
Traditionally a ‘summer trend’ the return of the Mac is something of a middle finger to tradition. Wandering the streets from Liverpool to London you can’t move for weather proofed humans and walking submarines, whether it’s down to Liam Gallagher’s “One Love” orange Mac revival or just another example of the Millennial approach to reason or season we will never know.
What we do know however is that if you don’t have a spare £500 lying around for an Oipolloi replica the Island has some very cool alternatives to protect you in style this winter:
Armor Lux heritage smock
Not just waterproof, but water REPELLENT the Armor Lux Anorak will have you strolling confidently through late night shopping with the rainwater literally bouncing off of your shoulders. As if that level of protection wasn’t enough, you will look Scandi epic as you do so. Available in brick red or classic navy, Esquires MD, Tom Williams reckons it is the perfect accompaniment to winter layering while being light enough to stash in your backpack should the weather gods be temporarily in your favour.
Sea Salt Cornwall, Seafolly long yellow Mac
(£140 @ The Tide Ramsey) – Ladies
So you may have heard the news; Ramsey isn’t that sh*t anymore! Case in point is the boutique clothing store The Tide. Bang on trend with their supply of edgy outdoor clothing lines from Sea Salt Cornwall and Tulchan The Tide has long been changing in Ramsey; it is their Mac game however that sets them apart.
The Seafolly is Sea Salt Cornwall’s take on the timeless classic yellow Mac and rate it we do. Well made, wind & waterproof and in the ultimate Mac yellow there is nothing to not love about this top quality product. If you’re not digging the fisherman vibes, then there is an entire range of colours to choose from so its time to dust off the picnic basket and cruise on up to Royal Rhumsaa, you will not be disappointed.
Lyle & Scott, Zip Front Mac
Back with our boys at Esquires, we dug out a classic Lyle & Scott number which has already proven popular with the Isle of Man crowd. The zip front Mac comes in a sexy light teal in a classic raincoat design with shiny popper buttons to ease the transition from rain, no rain, rain again in style.
Esquires MD, Rob Green reckons the chaps of the Island have long had an affinity with the Lyle & Scott brand so its no great surprise to find such a wardrobe staple doing so well, if you want to stay dry this winter whilst looking your most badass self then you best move fast as stocks are already shifting quickly out of the shop on Strand Street.
Wildcard entry: Penfield Kasson Mountain Parka
If like me you are digging the return of the Mac but the Manx air chills you to your bones then this insulated beauty courtesy of Penfield could be the one for you. Wool lined and windproof you get the style of the Mac with the warmth of a more traditional winter months coat, ideal for those wild trips to Ramsey for a Costa and a snoop in The Tide or on one of our many stunning coastal walks.
If you cant deal with your Mac addiction and can’t wait to get your water repellent fix then you can always check out Esquires online catalogue at Esquires where you will find an entire range of awesomeness from the boys at Esquires. Until next time ✌️
