Local Athlete and World Youth medallist Catherine Reid has been overwhelmed by support following a crowdfunding appeal to get her back on track following 3 years battling an ongoing knee injury that has held back her development since her remarkable breakthrough year in 2015.
Catherine, also known as Coob following an infant mispronunciation from brother and fellow International Athlete, Joe, holds a UK All-time Top 10 slot for the 400m and is held with high regard within the Athletics community both across the UK and back at home.
Sport can be a cruel Mistress but rarely do career threatening injuries develop at the age of 17 and for Coob, it has taken almost 3 years of rehab, prehab, massage, acupuncture and chiro for the diagnosis to finally come in, surgery is the only option, a scary reality at the tender age of 20!
Following a crowdfunding appeal to ease the financial burden on her family, Coob is all set to go under the knife and is already planning her return to the track with the vigour and determination of a true champion. With generous donations from over 180 benefactors, including GB Sprint legend Adam Gemilli and NedGroup Investments, it’s safe to say that confidence in Coob is high and the public are keen to see a return to what Coob hopes could one day be Olympic glory.
Within seconds of speaking to Coob it is easy to see why confidence is so high. A young woman who speaks with the clarity and determination of a seasoned pro, it is easy to forget her junior years. With the whopping £8500 raised within almost 24 hours, Catherine was eager to thank her generous backers: “I feel honoured that so many people are behind me supporting my journey. This support makes me feel so loved, inspired and determined to get back and show people I was worth believing in. I’m so excited for the hard work ahead, and I’m thankful for all the people who shared and donated to make this a possibility for me again”
The sound of the starters gun may still be a long way off for Catherine with a long and potentially frustrating 6 month of rehab ahead. One thing that we can be certain of is that Catherine Reid is far from done in the world of Athletics and if the progress of older brother Joe is anything to go by, we could very well be looking at our very own golden generation of Manx Athletes, not just representing us at the very highest level but chasing the big medals, at the biggest championships!
Catherine’s GoFundMe page is still live with any additional funds pledged towards rehab and any follow up travel expenses. One thing Gef sure is proud of is the amazing support and generosity of the Manx public to help this local Athlete have the opportunity to chase her dreams, injury free, once again!
